The Story Behind “Breakfast”

Spotlight

Say “breakfast” out loud and the seams almost disappear — but it is simply “break” plus “fast.” It is the meal that breaks the overnight fast, a phrase that has been doing exactly that since the 1400s.

Compounds that hide their meaning

Lots of everyday words are compounds we have stopped noticing. “Cupboard” was once a board for cups. A “wardrobe” guarded your robes. A “daisy” comes from “day’s eye,” because the flower opens at dawn.

Why this matters for puzzlers

Training yourself to hear the two halves inside a familiar word is a genuine SEEKING skill. Once you start splitting words automatically, the daily bridge gets a lot easier to spot.
